Superfly 2026 is postponed till 2027!!

Dear Superfly Angling Fans
The Superfly Committee has elected to postpone the 2026 Superfly Contest until 2027. The greater Gunnison watershed is currently experiencing historic drought level's and water temperatures continue to climb during these trying times. These low water conditions can put entirely too much stress on the fish.
Our Committee is very excited about 2027. We had a great deal of excitement and growth in 2025. We are tentatively planning a July 10th date for the 2027 Superfly Contest. We feel that there is much more water in the streams in July. We hope to see everyone again next summer.

Rules and Schedule

Superfly has hisotically been held on the first weekend after Labor Day. Two-person teams compete to see who can catch the most inches of trout in one day using the two flies of their choice. Anglers fish a variety of water in the Gunnison Valley, including premier private water on the East River, Taylor River, and Gunnison River. 2024 was another great event with the seasonal rains bumping us well into the safe zone for healthy fish. We are dedicated to protecting the anglers as well as the fisheries and low water and high temperatures equal stressed fish. Our monitors and teams are reminded to be diligent in observing water temps and avoiding stressing fish when the water temps hit 63°F. We increased the entry fee in 2022 to keep up with cost increases and overall budget concerns. It is the first time in almost 20 years the price has gone up.

We will not know the exact areas we will be able to fish until shortly before the contest starts. But not to worry, with the multitude of rivers and lakes in our area there are plenty of great angling opportunities. We have many fine local properties that have already agreed to allow us to use their river sections for our fishing beats. Besides the fishing contest, the Saturday night awards banquet which, is also available as a "banquet only" option, includes bucket drawing, silent auction, and door prizes. The entry fee is $800 per team. Each team member receives a quality fishing shirt and meals for the weekend event. The meals include a breakfast, box lunch, and a catered dinner. The majority of the event is in outdoor or open air environments for anyone concerned about illnesses and contact.

Friday night starts the fun with a reception and team registration. This is also when all the teams draw their beats (for both the morning and afternoon) and meet with the monitors. Free beer and hors d’oeuvres are served. Saturday morning begins with a grab-and-go breakfast and a sack lunch. Team members then register their flies and meet up with their monitors to go fishing for the day. Prizes are awarded Saturday night at the banquet for the top three teams, top rod, and the biggest fish.

New from 2021 moving forward: We have switched to providing the winners with plaques commemorating their accomplishments and are using our generously donated specialty items in the auction to garner more funds for our projects.

You can now register and pay online with a credit card. Teams can also enter by downloading the team entry form and mailing it with a check for $800 to the Gunnison Angling Society.
